BTEC 165 or Cultural Awareness for Healthcare Professionals is a self-paced online course offered spring quarter at Lower Columbia College, worth 5 diversity credits. There are no prerequisites for this class. This class investigates the cultural inequalities present in healthcare. Analyzes how cultural and linguistic variations can hinder access to healthcare and obstruct the adoption of health-enhancing or damage-reducing practices. Demonstrates effective cross-cultural communication by utilizing appropriate languages, fostering respectful attitudes, and leveraging cultural knowledge. Offers strategies for integrating cultural awareness skills in interactions with clients, families, community members, and colleagues. A previous student described the topics discussed in this class as “pushing the boundaries” when discussing topics of diversity and guiding you toward recognising people’s differences. They also mentioned the topic of genocide is discussed, allowing students to recognize the different stages of genocide.
