With the opening of the new Business Achievement Center at Lower Columbia College, students now have the opportunity to work collaboratively in a technology rich environment. Careful planning and coordination with several sectors on campus have resulted in the renovation of what for almost 20 years was the Business Technology Lab. Traditional on campus operations allow students to utilize individual workstations, 10-key machines, and a filmmaking space. Active learning spaces provide small teams the ability to share information to large screen monitors. A small private conference room is also available for meetings. Active learning spaces must be monitored by a faculty member and scheduled through 25Live. The team learning space provides 5 team pods supported by large screen monitors that students can connect to through online meeting software. During Spring 2020, the Business Achievement Center is operating via Zoom, to provide students with the opportunity to receive subject specific support in topics related to Accounting, Business, Information, and Technology. Students receive support from staff, student help, and faculty across a wide range of courses.

I built my computer a while back and I am running I7-4970k paired with GTX1070 ti Cerberus edition and I have 2 sticks of 8 GB DDR3 ram. I mainly use my PC for school work and gamming, but I have also dabbled in video and photo editing and have a youtube channel where I do play-throughs of Nintendo switch games. Hello Mark,
This is Lucas, I finally figured it out. Thank you for your patience and understanding. I am very new to this technology stuff and am looking forward to learning more. I am excited to start a blog soon, although I am nervous about my skills on starting a website. Honestly I’m not really sure what to start a website for. I used to sell aquarium shrimp and plants online a couple years ago, but that was totally through Ebay. I also bought and sold crypto currency for a little bit with my father in law, but we didn’t really know what we were doing. I spent many hours working on it though. For the website now I was just thinking of creating a discussion forum where I and others could speak freely about philosophy, permaculture, biodynamics, and really anything thought provoking.

I think this is a great opportunity that has been given to students who need workstations or a place for filmmaking. Being able to collaborate as a team for learning and projects. From experience, I know how difficult to learn as a group can be, and having a large screen or projector is helpful in trying to teach a subject and learn from it. I also think it is great that there is a private conference room as it helps in giving a different environment that is separated from the rest of the world, which if it is allowed would be a great place to do some group studying. During the current times, it is great that aspects of this can be operated remotely using Zoom as students no longer need to feel left out during this pandemic. Now more than ever is the best time to have support available to students who really need it.

I used the BTEC lab before it was transformed and got to see most of the transformation, but not the final product. Reading all that it is capable of for us students makes me excited for the future students that will have the opportunity to use the space, especially the team pods. This would have been very helpful with a few of my classes that required teams. Having a structured meeting place that you can show your work on a big screen for everyone to see, versus everyone trying to view your screen, makes the meetings run smoother and feel more professional.

I agree with you Jason, it’s come a long way in a short period of time. There were many people that were working at its design so it will be able to be useful. Once the Covid virus lets us use things it will be great!

Hi everyone,
Although I am not an experienced person with technology, I think it is what everyone needs to learn to get along in this world. I am slowly learning all of the newest gadgets, etc. and it is amazing what technology can do for us. It is wonderful that LCC is keeping up with the times and making sure we as students have all the resources possible to learn. Sometimes I hesitate out of fear of the unknown with technology but in the last two years, LCC has pushed me to go for it and I am a lot better with figuring out the computer, software, etc.
Sue Bennett
I think that the resources are going to be wonderful. Believe me being pushed is a good thing, you will appreciate it in the future.

It is wonderful to see how LCC sees the value of closely integrating technology with education. Technology improves students’ academic experiences and enriches their learning, and it is evident how the use of computers and other electronics has proven to be an efficient aid to both students and teachers through the past decade or so. The new Business Achievement Center is undoubtedly a great asset to LCC – the conference room gives students an experience of what it will be like working alongside others in the professional world, and the active learning spaces were a great idea as well.

I actually got to spend some time in this area towards the end of the winter quarter. I am not sure that it was completely done being revamped, however, the group stations were superb. Having a large screen helps immensely with group projects. I recall trying to do group projects on only one laptop so that everyone had access… it’s hard with the small screen. Having areas like this allows the whole group to collaborate at once.

Working in the school’s IT department it has been interesting to watch and participate in the progression of the new Business Achievement Center. The changes in the labs are remarkable, especially Lab 2. The new displays should make group work a breeze. It will be really nice when everyone can get back on campus and make the most of the improvements!

I think that this is a wonderful opportunity given to students because while in this day and age we have hit a remarkable point in time for technological advancement, electronics are still not a “necessity”. So it is harder for some students to gain access to these devices even though it is expected that people just have these. I am interested to see what students at LCC can do with this space.

Hello Mark!
I think it is great to have staff available at the center for any and all questions students will have. The Technology center is a great place and wonderful people to help which is wonderful for those who are a little technology challenged at times! Participating in the new Business Achievement Center is very interesting and I look forward to seeing what else happens on Campus and off campus. Zoom has been such a handy tool for us all, especially during this last and this spring quarter and everyone helps each other learn at Lower Columbia College, it is a team effort!

I think it is great that there is a section where students can go in and get help with technology based assignments. It is also very nice that there is sections for students to be able to work together on group projects, and the rooms are designed for the technology. I like that it has recently been remodeled to make it more usable for newer technology. Lots of changes have a occurred in technology in the past 20 years!

This is quite exciting. It seems as though this is going to be a rather nice place to work, and will offer a lot of potential for people to collaborate. I am excited to one day see the improvements in person. Group work can be extremely challenging with everyone on their own devices, or everyone clustered around one screen, so large, centralized screens seem like a no-brainer.

I’m excited that LCC has such an extensive technology lab. I believe that technology is the future. I also think that a lot of things that we have previously been doing on paper will be going virtual in the near future. Due to COVID, almost all schooling has gone online. An upgraded BTEC lab will certainly help students with any projects that have anything to do with business technology.
Leo Askeland
It’s really great to see LCC embracing technology with such open arms. Technology is beginning to truly dominate our world and its influence will only grow, so seeing an influential institution such as LCC embrace it is very encouraging as it will help further people’s grasp on technology and better prepare them for the future. The technology provided also seems to have a lot of emphasis on team work and group projects, this also being a very nice thing to see as it can help prepare people for the group environment many tech related jobs are hosted within.

Thank you for the rundown on the list of the new resources offered to students at LCC. The equipment and services offered are unexpected but welcome, as they will help students gain experience in relevant tools to the listed majors. The new Zoom availability is excellent news for students doing independent study like those in Website Management, and I look forward to using it. I’m curious about the addition of a filmmaking space – is that available to the drama students as well?
Ivan Araiza
I think this is a really good thing. I have been told by basically everyone in my life that technology is the future, so to see LCC giving all these great opportunities is just fantastic. This space can help people meet new people and grow their knowledge of specific things since people of the same major or interest will be there. It will also allow everyone to experience some new technology, this could help with learning new skills and just the overall way to use the machines.
Christopher
This is really superb. I think navigating businesses in the modern world requires some serious technological competence. Having a center (or lab) like this really encourages students to learn these skills. As Noah S. pointed out group projects with everyone at home is hard so having a center like this makes not only learning technology skills easier but learning in this class in general easier!
Cortlyn M.
It is great to see that each student will have resources available to them that they can utilize to be successful in their technology classes. Establishing labs and centers for students to come and practice their skills, learn, and work towards a possible career in the field is encouraging to see. This lab will be great for building skill through hands-on learning and actual personal interaction. Having a place where students with similar interests can collaborate is great to see coming out of a pandemic that made social interactions hard to come by.
This is a great upgrade for the LCC campus! I am excited to see how students will utilize this resource.
Cody
This is a wonderful investment to enhance student learning. Providing students with the tools and space to collaborate creates a safe yet functional environment to share ideas. From prior experiences, it can be a struggle to align with each persons schedule. Not to mention the barrier of where to meet when schedules do align. The ability to remote into a conference room aids in removing location as a barrier. I can still feel involved, even as a remote student. Lastly, this setup contributes to a real workplace environment by promoting coworking, meetings and teams.

I returned to Lower Columbia College during Summer of 2021 while all courses were online. I have yet to see the Business Achievement Center. Is this located in Lab 5, Room 109 of the Applied Arts Building? When I previously attended LCC, there were several active labs in the Applied Arts Building, but I don’t know all the resources that were available. If there is demand for specific technology to support business technology, including staff and student support, the Business Achievement Center is a great addition to the school.
Jarrett
I really love the thought behind this as it is hard to get together with groups and share things especially if it is a big file that you can not send over email. This also can come in handy if the task is so GPU or processor heavy that a laptop may struggle to handle it. You mentioned however something called “25Live” How do you reach that? Is it something I can find on the LCC main website or is there a link somewhere that I am missing?.

Although I have yet to physically visit the Business Achievement Center, it sounds like an extremely useful and advantageous place to visit for students who do plan to work in teams, both asynchronously and in-person. I think it is especially smart to provide a private conference room/space for students to collaborate without distraction, as well as team pods for students to work in together regardless of whether or not they can physically attend.

I’ve never been to the Business Achievement Center although it sounds really amazing! I know for a fact that I’d really be interested in the conference rooms and pods, as it would allow for students to work together undistracted. I think it is super smart to have subject orientated help for each subject provided by professionals too! I may have to check this out soon!

I think this could be immensely advantageous for all students at ICC. Although I have not yet visited, this facility seems remarkable, equipped with individual workstations, 10-key machines, and a filmmaking space. These resources could be a significant aid to students, unlocking a realm of limitless opportunities. It’s wonderful to know that such support will be available to those who need it.

I think it is wonderful that LCC is gaining a new resource such as this one! This allows students to be able to creatively work and explores ways of learning, teaching, completing assignments, and more. I think it also opens up a chance for students to use/learn things they may not have had in touch with before. Having a resource such as this one really can help with laptop issues, distracting spaces, and more! I love to see this type of set-up appearing in more spaces.

Hello, my name is Ezra. I really like the BAC program at Lower Columbia College. I think this is a great resource students gain get help and learn the basics of accessing a computer and a wide range of computer-based topics. I am currently taking a beginner computer class called BTEC. It has to do with the application called WordPress where many people create blogs. I used the BAC zoom at LCC at it was a great experience to get some help and advice with my learning. This is new news to me that we have a space at the school we can use where computers can be assessed, and we can get help. I will defiantly check out this space and use it the way it was intended. I’m exited to get to work with the BAC at LCC and look forward to meeting you all.

Hello Everyone. I really enjoy the Business Achievement Center. Whether it is the few times I have been there in person, or the many times that I have been there on the zoom, the people are extremely helpful, kind, and the atmosphere is really enjoyable. The BAC is an Amazing resource for the students to access. The students can get help with all kinds of classes, applications, assignments, and even just have a quiet space to get some work done. Also, sometimes there are instructors that pop in there that can help with stuff. All around, it has been an invaluable resource and an awesome experience. I highly recommend it for all students to utilize.
David
For the students who feel like they get pulled away every time they try to work on an assignment at home. The Business Achievement Center is a great place to get your work done distraction free. You can get to work and focus without worry. Even better, if you find yourself needing assistance, help is right there. I myself have found it quite helpful when I needed it. I think you will too. It is great that they provide this as there are people who need it and might not get their stuff done without it.

The new Business Achievement Center at Lower Columbia College is a great addition to the campus. Providing students with access to collaborative, technology-rich spaces will enhance learning and engagement. I especially like the inclusion of team pods and support through Zoom, which shows the college’s commitment to adapting to student needs both in person and online. This center is a great resource for students in business and technology programs to be successful.
